Full Article on Wikipedia
William Harrow was an American lawyer and soldier who played a significant role as a Union general during the American Civil War. William Harrow was born and educated in Kentucky before studying law and passing his bar exam in Illinois. He later moved to Indiana, where he married into a wealthy family and became a successful attorney. He was also chosen as the captain of a local militia company. During the Civil War, William Harrow volunteered for the Union Army and was eventually promoted to colonel. He participated in several battles and was later promoted to brigadier general. However, there were concerns about his ability to work well with others and his sobriety, which led to him being relieved of command and reassigned to the Western Theater. Despite his men initially resenting him, Harrow's command fought well in battles such as Atlanta and Ezra Church. After being left without an assignment, Harrow formally resigned from the army in April 1865. After returning to Mount Vernon, Harrow picked up his law practice and got involved in local politics. Unfortunately, he died in a train accident while on his way to make a speech supporting Horace Greeley. He is buried in Bellfontaine Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Indiana.
