Full Article on Wikipedia
Nicholas Sand, also known as Nicholas Francis Hiskey, was a well-known and respected figure in the psychedelic community. He worked as a secretive chemist for the Brotherhood of Eternal Love from 1966 to 1996. Sand was involved with the League for Spiritual Discovery at the Millbrook estate in New York and is credited with being the first underground chemist to synthesize DMT. He was especially known for his production of large quantities of LSD. Nicholas Sand was born in Brooklyn, New York City, in 1941. After his parents divorced, he took his mother's maiden name. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1959 and later attended Brooklyn College, where he earned a degree in anthropology and sociology in 1966. Sand became interested in different cultures and philosophies and had his first mescaline experience in 1961. He followed Leary and Alpert to Millbrook, where he synthesized DMT and discovered it was active when smoked. Sand started Bell Perfume Labs as a front for producing mescaline and DMT. He later purchased a farmhouse with Tim Scully in Windsor, California, where they set up an LSD lab and produced over 3.6 million tablets of LSD called "Orange Sunshine," which became the quality standard in 1969. In 1972, Nicholas Sand and other members of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love were indicted for their involvement in smuggling hashish and distributing LSD. The indictments were a result of a joint investigation by state, federal, and local authorities. Nicholas Sand and Judy Neal Shaughnessy were arrested in Missouri in 1973 for drug charges after a search of their home revealed chemicals and laboratory equipment. Sand, along with other individuals, was indicted by a grand jury in San Francisco in April 1973. Sand and Tim Scully were found guilty in January 1974 and Sand was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Sand appealed his conviction but it was denied. He fled to Canada in 1976 to evade imprisonment but was later arrested for drug manufacturing in British Columbia in 1990.
