Full Article on WikipediaGonzalo Aguirre Ramírez (25 January 1940 – 27 April 2021) was a Uruguayan politician, lawyer, and newspaper columnist. He worked in public service and also wrote regularly for the press. Aguirre Ramírez served as Vice President of Uruguay. His term lasted from 1990 to 1995.
Gonzalo Aguirre Ramírez was a Uruguayan politician from the National Party who studied law and became a respected constitutional-law lawyer. During the military regime (1973–1985) he became active in politics, and in 1984 he was chosen as vice-presidential running mate for Alberto Zumaran, though the National Party later lost the national election to the Colorado Party; Aguirre still became a Senator. In 1987 he split from his earlier faction to create Renovación y Victoria, and in 1988 this new group allied with Luis Alberto Lacalle’s Herrerismo faction, with Aguirre again serving as Lacalle’s running mate.
In the November 1989 elections, Lacalle-Aguirre won inside the National Party and defeated the Colorado Party and other groups. Aguirre became Vice President in March 1990 and supported Lacalle’s free-market policies, but in 1993 his faction left the coalition. He was later selected as a presidential candidate in 1994, then withdrew after objections that a vice president cannot run so close to the election, and supported his cousin instead; the National Party narrowly lost to the Colorado Party.
Aguirre did not win any elected position in the 1994 or 1999 elections. In 1999 he supported Juan Andrés Ramírez in the party primary and later ran for the Senate with Alianza Nacional, but he was not elected. After that, he stepped back from active politics, though he later supported Jorge Larrañaga in 2004, and he continued working as a lawyer and as a prominent columnist for El País; more recently, he re-joined Lacalle.
