Bobby Grier (November 10, 1942 – September 22, 2025) was an American professional football executive and coach. He worked in the National Football League (NFL). Bobby Grier was born in Detroit on November 10, 1942, and graduated from Eastern High School. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he played running back for the Hawkeyes from 1961 to 1964 as a three-year starter and earned two Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selections. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Grier started his coaching career in 1966 as an assistant coach at Waterford Kettering High School in Michigan. From 1970 to 1973, he was the head coach at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, where his 1973 team won the city championship with a 9-1 record. In 1974, Bobby Grier moved into college football as the running backs coach at Eastern Michigan University, working with head coaches George Mans and Ed Chlebek until 1977. He then became Boston College’s first full-time Black assistant coach when he joined Ed Chlebek in 1978, staying through 1980. In January 1981, he was hired as Northwestern University’s offensive backfield coach under head coach Dennis Green. Two months later, Bobby Grier joined the New England Patriots as their first black coach since 1966. After a poor 2–14 season and the firing of the coaching staff, he later returned as a scout in 1982 and became offensive backfield coach in 1985, when the team achieved strong rushing results and reached their first Super Bowl. In 1986, he took on the added role of running game coordinator and was kept on staff by later head coaches Rod Rust and Dick MacPherson.
