Full Article on WikipediaBilaspuri, also known as Kahluri, is a language spoken in northern India, specifically in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is primarily associated with the people of the former princely state of Bilaspur. Bilaspuri is classified as a variety of the Western Pahari language group, although it is listed as Punjabi in the census. The number of speakers of Bilaspuri/Kahluri is recorded as 295,805 according to the 2011 Census. The dialect spoken in the hilly part of Hoshiarpur district is also referred to as Pahāṛī.
The Bilaspuri language has five dialects, which are North-east Bilaspuri, North Bilaspuri, West Bilaspuri, Central Bilaspuri, and Davin or Daur. These dialects are closely related and can be considered as one dialect called Kahluri or Bilaspuri.
The Takri script is the writing system used for the Bilaspuri language.
The Pahari or Himachali language is endangered due to the dominance of recognized languages like Standard Punjabi or Hindi. Although efforts have been made to save the language, it is currently recorded as a dialect of Punjabi due to political reasons, despite linguists concluding that it is closer to other dialects of Western Pahari.
