The 1991 National Soccer League season was the 68th season played under the NSL name. It ended on September 22, 1991, when Toronto Italia won the championship by finishing first, edging Scarborough International and St. Catharines Roma by just one point. Toronto also won the NSL Ontario Cup, defeating the Toronto Jets at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. In addition, they won the NSL Canadian Cup by beating the Montreal Dollard at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard in Montreal. The National Soccer League grew from nine to ten clubs for the 1991 season, adding teams including North York Strikers and Toronto Jets, and returning Toronto International. This came after the league lost several financially troubled clubs, including Toronto First Portuguese and Toronto Panhellenic, as well as America United and Oshawa Italia. The NSL also worked to improve ties in Quebec, increased its focus on recruiting Canadian players, and later discussed disputes with the Canadian Soccer Association, leading to a friendly match between the Canadian Olympic team and Toronto Italia while continuing the NSL Canadian Cup. The NSL awards for 1991 were announced on December 18, 1991, and went to players and staff from London City, Toronto Croatia, and Toronto Italia. Peter Felicetti was named Coach of the Year after leading Italia to the championship, while London City’s Paul Hillman received Rookie of the Year. Ivica Raguž of Toronto Croatia won the MVP award and later went on to play in the Croatian First Football League and the S. League.
