Yeah Yeah Yeahs is the debut EP by the American indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was self-released on July 9, 2001, and later reissued in 2002 in the UK by Wichita and in the US by Touch and Go. The EP began as a fast two-day demo recording in early 2001 with producer Jerry Teel, and it was turned into their debut release to help the band book more shows. The music blends early garage rock and art punk, while Karen O’s lyrics focus on themes of romance and sex. The EP became very successful, topping the UK Indie Chart and selling over 71,000 copies by the end of the decade. Critics praised its unique sound and Karen O’s performances, and it was listed by major outlets as one of the best releases, with Paste ranking it among the 100 greatest EPs in 2024. In 2000, Karen O and Nick Zinner formed Unitard, then changed their name to Yeah Yeah Yeahs and added drummer Brian Chase, building a fanbase through their live shows. They worked with Jerry Teel to co-produce a demo that became their debut EP, which Zinner described as a way to land gigs at “cool clubs” by opening for bigger bands. The EP was recorded over two days at Funhouse Recording Studio in New York, mastered at Soundoptik, with artwork designed by the band and Crispin; the cover features close-up and self-photos of the members, and the EP is sometimes incorrectly listed as Master or Bang. Karen O wrote the lyrics for all five tracks, while the band co-wrote the music to capture a trashy, punky, gritty Ohio sound and their own cocky stage attitude. Her staccato, intentionally rough vocal style stands out, and the band drew inspiration from groups like ESG, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Jonathan Fire*Eater, plus artists such as PJ Harvey and John Zorn. The songs range from “Bang,” about Karen O’s sexual dissatisfaction, to “Mystery Girl,” “Art Star”’s satire of jet-set culture, “Miles Away,” and the closing anthem “Our Time,” originally “Year to Be Hated,” which later strongly resonated with New Yorkers after September 11. Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their EP on July 9, 2001, independently through their Shifty label, not expecting major success. They later gained attention after Albert Hammond Jr. wore their pin on Saturday Night Live, and Mark Bowen of Wichita Recordings was impressed by the song “Bang,” leading to UK distribution in 2002. Touch and Go Records then reissued the EP in the United States in July 2002 after the band’s strong showing at South by Southwest. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP was well received and became a sleeper hit, selling over 71,000 copies in the US and charting strongly in the UK, Australia, Denmark, and Sweden. Critics praised its energetic, innovative sound and especially Karen O’s performances, though some noted its lo-fi style and production may have limited its commercial appeal. Over the years, reviewers continued to rank it highly, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone’s Album Guide and later lists calling it essential and among the greatest EPs of all time.
