It was developed over seven years by designer Andrew Shouldice and received positive reviews for its aesthetics and gameplay. Tunic won several awards for its independent game and artistic achievements. Tunic is an action-adventure game where the player controls a fox in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. The player must explore the terrain, fight enemies, and solve puzzles with little instruction. The game features hidden paths, collectible items, and a constructed writing system. The plot of Tunic unfolds as the fox player character collects manual pages, revealing the backstory and context of the game. The fox embarks on a journey through ruins, collects weapons and magical bells, and encounters a trapped larger fox. The fox must collect crystal keys and defeat the Heir, who represents a corrupted power that is eroding reality and looping time. Two possible endings occur depending on the player's actions, either becoming the new Heir or breaking the cycle and freeing the trapped fox. Andrew Shouldice began working on the game Tunic in February 2015, initially with a human protagonist in mind but later switching to an anthropomorphic fox. He wanted to create a game that combined challenging gameplay with visually pleasing design and audio. The game's colorful design was inspired by games like The Legend of Zelda and Monument Valley, and Shouldice aimed to create a sense of mystery and discovery for players. He also drew inspiration from game manuals and wanted to incorporate a constructed writing system that players would not have to decipher. The combat design was influenced by Bloodborne, and the game's story drew from the idea of corrupted worlds. Tunic also explored the concept of a player navigating through a mysterious world as an insignificant character. The game, initially announced as Tunic in 2017, was finally released on March 16, 2022, for macOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Ports for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 were released on September 27, 2022. The release was accompanied by a digital album of music and a second album of piano sketches. The development process took longer than expected due to iterative redesign and the challenges of a small team working on a complex game.
