Operation Brevity took place in mid-May 1941 during the Western Desert Campaign of World War II. It was planned by British commander General Archibald Wavell as a fast attack against weak Axis forces near the Sollum–Capuzzo–Bardia area along the Egypt–Libya border. The British push initially caused confusion for the Axis, but local counter-attacks and the arrival of German reinforcements quickly reversed most early gains, so the operation was called off after just one day. By that time, the Axis—strengthened by Rommel and the Afrika Korps—had driven Allied forces back to the border, and Tobruk remained a key threat to Axis supply lines because of the city’s strong garrison. Brevity aimed to take territory for another attack toward Tobruk and to wear down German and Italian forces. Brigadier William Gott captured Halfaya Pass and Fort Capuzzo, but German counter-attacks retook the fort, leading to a controlled withdrawal and the end of the operation; the pass was later retaken in Operation Skorpion. In September 1940, the Italian 10th Army invaded Egypt, but by early 1941 Britain’s Western Desert Force launched Operation Compass, pushing about 500 miles, taking Cyrenaica, and effectively destroying the Italian army. The British advance then stalled due to supply problems and Britain’s focus on the Battle of Greece, leading to reorganisation and losses of key commanders and divisions. Meanwhile, the German Afrika Korps arrived in North Africa to reinforce the Axis, drove British forces back, captured senior leaders, and led to the Battle line stabilising around Tobruk and Sollum. Although the Axis pushed into Egypt and seized Sollum and the Halfaya Pass, they could not capture Tobruk because the British held the port with Royal Navy supply, leaving the British with the strategic initiative. General Archibald Wavell planned Operation Brevity as a quick attack in the Sollum area to set up a larger offensive, Operation Battleaxe, planned for June. Brevity’s main goals were to retake Halfaya Pass, push enemy forces out of Sollum and Capuzzo, and cause casualties, while a secondary goal was to advance toward Tobruk only as far as supplies allowed and without endangering the main force. Operation Brevity was carried out by the 22nd Guards Brigade and part of the 7th Armoured Division, with 29 cruiser tanks from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment and 24 infantry tanks from the 4th Royal Tank Regiment. The RAF provided all its fighters and a small number of bombers, and Brigadier William Gott led the advance in three parallel columns. In the south, the 7th Armoured Brigade group was to drive to Sidi Azeiz, destroying resistance and using mobile patrol units to watch the left flank and the Sidi Azeiz–Bardia road. In the centre, the 22nd Guards Brigade would clear Halfaya Pass and secure several key points before probing toward Bardia, while in the north the coast group would advance along the coastal road to capture the lower Halfaya Pass, Sollum barracks, and Sollum itself. The Axis side faced a main opposition force on the desert plateau near Halfaya Pass, defended by Italian and German units including tanks, motorised infantry, and artillery, with Bersaglieri holding the front line. On 9 May the Germans intercepted a British weather report that had previously been sent before major offensives, so Rommel reinforced his defenses around Tobruk and ordered Kampfgruppe von Herff to be more aggressive. By 13 May Axis aircraft bombed British tank groups, but on 14 May the planes could not find the British and the Germans reported that the enemy’s attack plans were unclear.
