Marcus Edward Trescothick, born in 1975, is a former English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset and represented England in 76 Tests and 123 ODIs. He captained Somerset from 2010 to 2016 and also stood in as temporary England captain in a number of matches. A left-handed opening batsman, he debuted for Somerset in 1993, made his ODI debut in 2000, and then his Test debut later that year. He was known as an aggressive opener and set records for ODI centuries and for the fastest half-century in English Twenty20 cricket, while also being skilled in the slip field and occasionally bowling or keeping wicket. His international career was disrupted by a stress-related illness that led him to retire from internationals in 2008, though he continued playing for Somerset and returned to the side after rebuilding his form. After retiring from playing in 2019, he went into coaching and commentary and is now the lead batting coach for the England Test team. Marcus Trescothick was born on 25 December 1975 in Keynsham, Somerset, the younger of two children. He was surrounded by cricket from an early age, with his father’s strong involvement in the sport, and he began playing seriously at school, rapidly impressing with big scores for Avon and later Gloucestershire and Somerset youth teams. By his mid-teens he was playing alongside England under-14s players and performing at a high level across multiple age groups, earning recognition as an outstanding young cricketer of the year. Trescothick had a standout first full season for Somerset in 1994, scoring 925 runs at an average of 48.63 and earning two centuries and eight fifties. Despite a slower 1995, he continued to do very well for England Under-19, was later named Under-19 captain, and built a strong England Under-19 record. Over the next years he faced criticism about his footwork and scored more modestly, but he still won Somerset’s NBC Denis Compton Award twice and produced major knocks, including 322 for Somerset Second XI in 1997 and 167 for Somerset against Glamorgan. After England coach Duncan Fletcher called on him to debut in 2000, Trescothick’s regular England selection meant he was often unavailable for domestic cricket for much of 2000–2006. Trescothick debuted fully for England in ODIs against Zimbabwe at The Oval in July 2000, scoring 79, and then followed up with a man-of-the-match 87 not out to finish the NatWest tournament with 288 runs at an average of 48.00. His early success led to his Test debut later that summer against the West Indies at Old Trafford, where he showed calm after early wickets and averaged 47.50 across the series. During England’s following tours and series, Trescothick had mixed results: he earned his first Test century (71) in Pakistan warm-up and later scored a century against Sri Lanka’s Colts XI, but his ODI form was less consistent. In 2001, although he made 117 in a Test versus Pakistan and hit 137 in an ODI, he later had two straight ducks and England lost all their matches in the NatWest Series. In 2001–02, Trescothick had mixed results, struggling to make big scores in Zimbabwe despite consistent batting, and showing a tendency to get out when well set. He then excelled on England’s winter tour of India, averaging 48.00 in Tests and 53.00 in ODIs, including a 99 and key performances such as man-of-the-match efforts that helped England win. His season later included setbacks like a thumb fracture, a less successful New Zealand tour, and being overshadowed by Michael Vaughan in the 2002–03 Ashes, before a disappointing 2003 World Cup.
