Manchester is a city in Greater Manchester, England, with a population of over 589,000 in 2024. It sits between the Cheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east, and it lies next to Salford to the west. Together with nearby towns and cities, Manchester forms the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, one of the UK’s most populous conurbations, with 2.87 million people. The city began around a Roman-era settlement near the rivers Medlock and Irwell, and it grew greatly during the Industrial Revolution when textile manufacturing boomed. Manchester became a city in 1853, and the Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894 to connect it to the Irish Sea; after World War II, deindustrialisation led to decline, but later regeneration followed events including the 1996 bombing. Today, Manchester is known for its redevelopment, major events like the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and for areas such as architecture, music, media, science and engineering, sport, and transport links. The name Manchester comes from the Roman name Mamucium (also seen as Mancunio), and the people are still called Mancunians. It is thought to be based on older Brittonic words, either meaning “breast” (for a hill shape) or “mother” (linked to a river goddess), while the suffix “-chester” comes from Old English meaning a Roman fortification. Manchester is also known by nicknames like “warehouse city” and “cottonopolis,” and “Manny” is sometimes used but can be offensive to some residents. Although “Manchester” officially refers only to the metropolitan borough, it has often been used informally for wider areas, such as transport and postal zones, which do not match the official city boundaries. The Brigantes were the first major Celtic people in the Manchester area, with a stronghold near today’s Manchester Cathedral and territory stretching across parts of Salford and Stretford. After Rome conquered Britain, the Roman general Agricola built the fort of Mamucium in 79 AD to protect Roman interests, and Manchester has been continuously settled since. Roman life likely declined by the 3rd century, with the civilian settlement abandoned by then, though the fort may have lasted longer. Remains of Mamucium can still be seen at Castlefield, and it was studied by archaeologists in 1906 and opened to the public in 1984. After the Romans left and the Anglo-Saxons settled, Manchester’s centre shifted to where the rivers Irwell and Irk meet. It was affected by Norman attacks, later grew around its churches, became a major market for wool and linen, and received Flemish weavers who helped shape the region’s textile industry. During the English Civil War it backed Parliament, and in later centuries cotton production boomed as transport improved with canals and navigable rivers, making Manchester the leading textile trading town. Its growth was also tied to the transatlantic slave trade, as cotton goods were exported to Africa to help fund the purchase of enslaved people. Manchester became a major textile hub during the Industrial Revolution, especially for cotton processing, which drove fast and poorly planned growth into the world’s first industrialised city. It was also known for its cotton trading, and industries such as engineering, chemicals, and finance expanded alongside it. Large political and workers’ movements emerged too, including the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, while transport improvements like new canals and the Liverpool–Manchester railway supported the city’s expanding population. Cotton mills later peaked and declined as other towns took over spinning, even as Manchester grew more important as a regional financial centre, gaining early telephone services in 1878.
