Las Meninas is a famous 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez, a leading artist at the court of King Philip IV, and it is now one of the most studied works in Western art. Scholars analyze it because its complicated arrangement makes you wonder what is real and what is only an illusion, and how the viewer relates to the people shown. It is thought to show a scene in the Royal Alcázar of Madrid, with court figures captured as if in a moment, including the young Infanta Margaret Theresa surrounded by her attendants. Velázquez also paints himself in the scene, looking outward toward the viewer, while a mirror in the back reflects the king and queen, whose exact placement is debated. Over time, major artists and philosophers praised the work for its deep meaning, and later thinkers used it to discuss how painting represents reality, who is watching, and the role of the mirror and space. In 17th-century Spain, painting was seen more as a craft than a high art, but Velázquez rose to a powerful court position under Philip IV. In 1651 he became palace chamberlain, gaining status and money but leaving him little time to paint, mostly royal portraits, including Las Meninas, after 33 years in the household. Philip’s family situation also shaped the context of the painting: after the deaths of his wife and only son, he married Mariana of Austria, and their children appear while Velázquez was allowed access to Philip’s studio space. Velázquez was also highly trusted and unusually independent as court painter and curator, helping expand and organize the king’s major European art collection, much of which later formed the core of the Prado. Las Meninas (“La Familia” in early records) was carefully described in 1666 and later in 1724, and infrared examination shows small changes the artist later adjusted, such as the direction of his head. The painting was cut down, damaged in the 1734 Alcázar fire, and restored afterward, including major repainting to replace lost pigment on the Infanta’s face; later inventories also misidentified her. In recent years its colors have faded from pollution and visitors, and it was last cleaned in 1984, a process that caused public controversy even though experts later considered the restoration excellent. Around 1981, experts carried out a detailed technical study at the Museo del Prado, including pigment analysis, to learn what was used in Velázquez’s painting. They found typical Baroque pigments, especially lead white, azurite for the kneeling girl’s skirt, vermilion and red lake, plus ochres and carbon blacks. Las Meninas is set inside Velázquez’s studio in the Alcázar palace, where the young Infanta Margarita Theresa stands in the foreground with her attendants, dwarves, and the chaperone. Behind her, the chamberlain Don José Nieto Velázquez stands near a doorway or curtain, helping create a deep space effect and suggesting the royal couple may be entering or leaving; Velázquez himself appears on the left painting, with symbols of his court role. The mirror reflects King Philip IV and Queen Mariana, and scholars debate whether this reflection shows the royal couple’s view, Velázquez’s canvas, or another staged moment, while the room’s surrounding paintings further reinforce themes of challenge and punishment.
