“Lacy” (styled in all lowercase) is a song by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, released with her 2023 album Guts through Geffen Records. Rodrigo co-wrote the track with producer Dan Nigro, and it is a folk-pop/indie folk song that began as a poem she wrote for a class assignment. The lyrics describe Rodrigo’s intense focus on a woman named Lacy, while also showing her envy and self-hatred. Critics praised the song’s writing, production, and the emotion in Rodrigo’s performance, and some noted possible LGBTQ themes in the lyrics. The song reached the top 30 in several countries and earned platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Rodrigo has performed “Lacy” at venues like the Grammy Museum and Tiny Desk, included it on her Guts World Tour set list, and it was covered by Noah Kahan for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Olivia Rodrigo released her debut album Sour in May 2021, then paused songwriting for six months before creating her follow-up Guts (2023) with producer Dan Nigro. “Lacy” began as a poem she wrote for a homework assignment while taking poetry classes at USC, and she later turned it into a song that she said is among her favorites on the album. Rodrigo shared Guts’ tracklist in August 2023, and “Lacy” became available when the album released on September 8. After its release, fans speculated about who the song was about, and Rodrigo said she writes songs about herself and her feelings. She later performed “Lacy” at several venues and concerts, including major festival appearances from 2025 onward and it was featured in her Guts World Tour performances and concert film. “Lacy” is a 2:57 acoustic ballad with a fingerpicked folk-pop sound and theatrical folk influences, built around layered vocal harmonies that move into a synth/electronic flourish. It was recorded in Los Angeles and New York, produced and engineered by Nigro, mixed in Vancouver, and mastered in New Jersey. The lyrics portray Rodrigo’s jealousy and obsession with a woman named Lacy, using vivid comparisons and repeating hooks, a theme critics often linked to “Jolene,” “Jealousy, Jealousy,” and other femme-fantasy jealousy songs. Some reviewers noted possible LGBTQ undertones and interpreted Lacy as an imaginative persona or inner voice, which Rodrigo said she appreciated. Critics praised “Lacy” for its smart songwriting, strong chorus, and intimate, airy production, with many highlighting Rodrigo’s intense vocal performance. Some reviews were more negative, especially over specific lyrics comparing her skin to food, though others still pointed out that the music and harmonies help balance the writing. In year-end and retrospective rankings, the song appeared high on several lists and was noted as mysterious or puzzling among the tracks on Guts. “Lacy” debuted at number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached similar positions internationally, such as number 24 in Canada and number 26 on the UK audio streaming chart. It earned multiple certifications, including platinum in Canada and Australia and platinum in New Zealand, along with gold in the UK and Brazil. The song also appeared on charts worldwide, reaching the top 20 in places like Ireland (number 18) and charting on the Billboard Global 200 (number 20).
