KPop Demon Hunters is a 2025 American animated musical urban fantasy film made for Netflix by Sony Pictures Animation. It was co-written and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and features voices from Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, and others. The film follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix, who secretly hunt demons while competing against the Saja Boys, a rival boy band whose members are demons. It was inspired by Kang’s Korean heritage, blending mythology and demon lore with K-pop, and its visuals draw from concert lighting, music videos, anime, and Korean dramas. The movie streamed on Netflix on June 20, 2025, became Netflix’s most-watched original title by the end of the year, and earned major chart and soundtrack success. It also won many awards, including major wins at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, and a sequel is currently being developed. Long ago, demons attacked humans until three women created the Honmoon, a magical barrier meant to keep demons away. In the present, the K-pop trio Huntrix must strengthen it to permanently banish demons, but Rumi—secretly half-demon—starts losing her voice as demonic patterns spread, while Gwi-Ma sends rival demons to steal their fans and weaken the Honmoon. Rumi makes a risky deal with Jinu, a human-turned-demon who hides her secret and wants redemption for the past, but Gwi-Ma’s power grows and tricks Huntrix and the crowd into feeding his army. During the Idol Awards, Rumi breaks free of the deception by singing through her shame, reunites with her bandmates, and with Jinu’s sacrifice they defeat Gwi-Ma, restore the Honmoon into a stronger rainbow seal, and end with Rumi accepting her demon nature. Liza Koshy voices a TV host who interviews Huntrix. Maggie Kang, Nathan Schauf, and Charlene Ramos add additional voices for other parts of the show. Director Maggie Kang first pitched KPop Demon Hunters to producer Aron Warner in 2018, and development started that year. Sony announced the film publicly in March 2021, with Kang and Chris Appelhans directing a script by Hannah McMechan and Danya Jimenez, and Warner and Michelle L. M. Wong producing. Kang shaped the film’s style around Korean mythology and shamanism, using song and dance in the demon-hunting history, and also aimed for characters that feel fun and human rather than just “cool” superhero types, with influences from Bong Joon Ho and The Host. Huntrix and the Saja Boys were designed to look like K-pop groups, but with strong Korean traditional influences. Huntrix’s styling blends modern haute couture with Korean elements like norigae pendants and traditional weapons, while the Saja Boys perform in black hanbok and use imagery tied to the folklore jeoseung saja (including lion symbolism in their logo). The designers also shaped character looks over time, shifting Huntrix from a sweet early style toward a darker, jeoseung saja appearance, and used costume changes—like tearing Rumi’s outfit in the second act—to show the breaking of a “dream” that K-pop perfection represents.
