"Janet(s)" is an episode of the TV show The Good Place, where the main characters help others on Earth. In the episode, the humans turn into versions of Janet to escape from demons. Eleanor has feelings for Chidi but he doesn't feel the same way, leading to an identity crisis. Michael and Janet investigate if the Bad Place is manipulating the points system in the afterlife. The episode received praise from critics and won awards for its writing and performance. It explores the meaning of identity and why nobody has reached the Good Place in a long time. In "Janet(s)", Janet transforms Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason into versions of herself in her void. Meanwhile, Michael and Janet meet with Neil, the head accountant, who denies any tampering with the afterlife points system but reveals that no one has reached the Good Place in over 500 years. In the void, Eleanor and Chidi struggle to connect, while Jason and Tahani discover Janet's romantic feelings for Jason. Eventually, Chidi lists Eleanor's memories and kisses her, restoring their identities. The group escapes the void and arrives in the Good Place. The idea for an episode featuring multiple Janets was conceived during the show's second season, and the writers were initially concerned about its feasibility. However, after seeing other shows successfully pull off similar ideas, they gained confidence to move forward. They enlisted the help of philosophical advisors and the cast began rehearsing earlier than usual, with the actors providing footage and assistance to D'Arcy Carden as she prepared to play multiple characters. Filming for the episode took place over five and a half days and required more planning and visual effects than usual. Janet's void was represented by a white set with added furniture to prevent boredom. Some scenes used stand-ins, while others only had poles to represent the characters. Different individuals, including a guest appearance by Stephen Merchant, were portrayed by Eleanor as she lost her sense of self. The crew had concerns during filming about whether the episode would make sense in the end. The episode explores the concept of self and how it shapes our actions and moral choices. Critics discuss the significance of Chidi's role in helping Eleanor rediscover her identity and how this influences her behavior. The reveal that nobody has reached the Good Place in over 500 years prompts speculation on why this is the case, with theories ranging from the flaws in the system to the challenges of being truly good in modern society.
