The memorial is a grade II listed building. After the First World War, many war memorials were built in Britain, with architect Sir Edwin Lutyens being one of the most prominent designers. Hove, located on the English south coast, played a significant role in the war, with a Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve station and various recruitment events taking place. The town also provided healthcare for injured servicemen and was home to Belgian refugee families and German prisoners of war. Over 600 men from Hove lost their lives in the war. The war memorial in Hove was commissioned by a committee that wanted a functional memorial that would benefit the living. After rejecting a few proposed designs, the committee chose Lutyens to design the monument, which consisted of a statue and column. The location of the memorial had to be changed a few times, but once the design was agreed upon, the project proceeded smoothly and was one of the first of Lutyens' to be completed. The Hove War Memorial is an elegant bronze statue of Saint George on top of a stone column. The statue holds a sword and shield and stands on a plinth on a Tuscan column. The memorial has inscriptions relating to the First and Second World Wars, and the names of those who died are listed on brass plaques in the entrance to Hove Library. The design of the memorial is similar to other memorials by the sculptor Sir George Frampton and represents bravery and honor. Some have criticized the memorial as formulaic and lacking originality. The Hove War Memorial was unveiled in 1921 at a cost of £1,537. Designed by architect Edwin Lutyens, the memorial overlooks the sea and a statue of Queen Victoria. It is now a grade II listed building and is protected from demolition or modification.
