The Hongwu Emperor, born Zhu Yuanzhang in 1328 and reigning from 1368 to 1398, was the founder of the Ming dynasty. Growing up as a peasant in Anhui during the Mongol-led Yuan era, he faced epidemics, famine, and rebellions, and his parents and brother died when he was 16. After a brief time as a monk and begging for food, he joined the Red Turban rebels in 1352 and soon rose to lead his own forces, capturing Nanjing in 1356 and building a strong power base in southern China. In 1364 he declared himself King of Wu, and in 1368 he renamed his state as the Hongwu era and drove Mongol forces out to unify China. His long reign focused on strengthening government and society after years of war, protecting ordinary people, and managing military actions carefully. He died in 1398, his grandson became emperor, and later Zhu Di overthrew him in 1402 to become the Yongle Emperor. Zhu Yuanzhang, who would become the Hongwu Emperor, was born in 1328 in Zhongli village near Haozhou (now Fengyang, Anhui), during Mongol-led Yuan rule. He was the youngest son of peasant parents, lost several family members to hardship and a plague, and his upbringing included stories from his mother shaped by loyalty to the Song dynasty. In 1344, after a plague killed his parents and brother, he became a Buddhist novice, wandering and begging for alms for three years before returning to the monastery in 1348, where he learned to read and write and studied Buddhism for four years. Harsh Yuan taxes, famine, and deadly Yellow River flooding led many people to oppose Mongol rule. Taoist and Buddhist secret groups, especially the White Lotus, helped spark rebellion, and in 1351 the Red Turban Rebellion erupted and spread across northern China. After the Mongols temporarily pushed back and captured key areas, rebel leaders in Haozhou began organizing forces, and Zhu—joining after his monastery was destroyed—rose quickly through skill and leadership. Rivalries between Peng and Zhao grew into conflict, and though Zhao tried to split them, Zhu strengthened his army and ultimately faced Guo alongside the growing rebel force. In 1355, Zhu and his allies moved from the devastated north to the wealthier south, clashing with other rebel forces around the Yangtze. After capturing Taiping and returning to attack Jiqing (renamed Yingtian in 1356), Zhu consolidated control as commanders surrendered and rivals were betrayed or killed, while Han Lin’er made him head of Jiangnan. Over the next years, Zhu built a strong, organized army, secured his borders, and took advantage of Song and Mongol turmoil—especially after Han Lin’er was driven from Kaifeng—until his authority largely replaced the collapsing Song state. In 1360, Zhu controlled parts of Jiangsu, Anhui south of the Yangtze, and inland Zhejiang, while rival powers Chen Youliang and Zhang Shicheng held other regions around the Yangtze. The war with Chen (1360–1363) damaged rival strength but boosted Zhu’s position, and after Zhu’s forces defeated Chen’s fleet at the Battle of Lake Poyang (September 1363), Chen was killed and the fight continued under his successors. After Zhu supported Han Lin’er and displaced Han’s court, Chen tried to use Zhu’s northern focus to regain ground, but Zhu returned and finished the conflict by taking Wuchang in 1364 and absorbing most of Chen Han by 1365. Zhu then reorganized his growing forces under the Weisuo system, using former Han troops in garrisons and campaigns against remaining threats like Zhang Shicheng.
