Five Nights at Freddy's is a survival horror game where players take on the role of a night security guard at a family pizzeria. They must avoid being attacked by animatronic characters by using security cameras and locking steel doors. The game was developed by Scott Cawthon in response to criticism of his previous game. It was released in 2014 for Windows and later became available on other platforms. The game received positive reviews for its atmosphere and gameplay mechanics, and it gained a large following on YouTube. Its success led to the creation of sequels and a film adaptation. In Five Nights at Freddy's, players control a night security guard who must survive from midnight to 6:00 a.m. without being caught by animatronic characters. The player uses security cameras to track the animatronics' movement, and can use lights and steel doors to keep them out. The player must manage their limited electrical power to last the night and as the game progresses, the animatronics become more aggressive and difficult to avoid. The game starts with Mike Schmidt receiving a voicemail from his predecessor, who warns him about the animatronics in the restaurant. Throughout the game, the player learns about disturbing events in the restaurant's history, including the disappearance of five children. On the fourth night, it is implied that Schmidt's predecessor was killed by an animatronic, and after completing the seventh night, Schmidt is fired. Scott Cawthon, the developer of Five Nights at Freddy's, had previously created Christian games that were unsuccessful. After experiencing a crisis of faith, he decided to create a horror game instead. Despite initially receiving negative feedback for his previous game, Cawthon was inspired to make something intentionally scary and developed Five Nights at Freddy's over six months. The game was released on various platforms starting in 2014, and eventually made its way to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019. The game was generally well received by critics, with praise for its frightening atmosphere and well-designed gameplay mechanics. Reviewers appreciated the lack of graphic violence and praised the sound design, noting how it added to the tense atmosphere. There was some debate about the game's approach to horror, with some critics finding it too reliant on jumpscares and lacking replay value. However, overall, Five Nights at Freddy's was considered a standout horror experience.
