Destiny’s Child was an American girl group formed in Houston, Texas, in 1990. The group’s final lineup included Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, and they became famous for strong vocal harmonies, energetic performances, and empowering themes for women. They helped revive the girl group genre in the 1990s and shaped the sound of modern R&B. The group started as Girl’s Tyme and later signed with Columbia Records, gaining major success with hit songs like “No, No, No” and especially from the album The Writing’s on the Wall. Internal conflicts and legal issues led to lineup changes in the early 2000s, after which they released major hits such as “Independent Women” and “Bootylicious,” then went on a hiatus for solo projects. They reunited for their final album, Destiny Fulfilled, and after officially disbanding in 2006 they continued to perform together, earning widespread acclaim and major awards. In 1990, Beyoncé met LaTavia Roberson while auditioning for an all-girl entertainment group in Houston, Texas. The group, originally called Girl’s Tyme, grew into a small team with Beyoncé highlighting her strong vocal talent, but early plans for a national breakthrough on Star Search failed when they chose the wrong kind of song; afterward, Mathew Knowles began managing them, they practiced and trained locally, and they opened for well-known R&B acts while repeatedly changing their name. Struggles to land a record deal put major pressure on the family, leading to job loss and a temporary separation in 1995. In 1996 they became Destiny’s Child, signed with Columbia Records that year, and after earlier recordings in Oakland, their major-label debut “Killing Time” was used on the Men in Black soundtrack in 1997. Destiny’s Child released “No, No, No” in 1997, which became a major hit and led to their 1998 debut album Destiny’s Child. While the album performed moderately and “With Me” didn’t match the success of their first single, the group later shifted toward a more mainstream sound for their second album, The Writing’s on the Wall. That album topped the charts with “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name,” and major lineup changes followed when Luckett and Roberson left in early 2000 after internal conflicts and legal action, replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. In 2000–2003, Destiny’s Child won major awards, including Grammys for “Say My Name,” and released “Independent Women Part I,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 straight weeks and appeared on their album Survivor. Beyoncé took a bigger creative role on Survivor, which debuted at number one and sold heavily, while the group also faced lawsuits related to their earlier dispute. After September 11, they canceled a tour and performed a benefit, then went on hiatus so members could pursue solo work—Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love became the most successful and won five Grammys—before Solange’s possible return was ultimately dismissed. After reuniting, Destiny’s Child recorded their final album, Destiny Fulfilled, released on November 15, 2004. It reached number two on the Billboard 200, produced four hit singles, earned five Grammy nominations, and blended connected themes written by all three members. To promote it, they toured worldwide and announced that they would end the group at the tour’s conclusion, explaining that the split had already been decided during the album’s making. In 2005 they also released their greatest-hits album #1’s, which debuted at number one and included fan favorites plus three new songs, even though not all of the tracks had actually topped the Hot 100.
